What Are Solar Attic Fans?

A solar attic fan is a motorized fan attached to your roof that uses the sun to produce electricity that actively exhausts hot air from your attic.  An active exhaust fan is preferable to one that only spins when the wind is blowing. However, having a typical active exhaust fan can be costly to install because of electrician costs, as well as, the use

of additional electricity.

Why Is It Helpful To Run Solar Attic Exhaust Fans?

There are many reasons it is beneficial to reduce the heat and moisture in your attic. The most significant reason is to reduce your utility bills.

When your air conditioner is running, the air passes through a space where the temperature can easily reach 140 degrees. By reducing attic temperatures by up to 40 degrees, the ducts run through a much cooler space, thereby reducing cooling loss.

Even in a well-insulated home, the rooms below are more easily cooled and retain their cold air longer by reducing the temperature of the space above it.  Additionally, lowering the temperature and moisture in the attic will extend the life of the air handler, insulation and roof components.

When Do They Turn On And How Do The PV Panels Work?

When the sunshine touches the PV (solar electric) panel, the fan begins to turn.  The stronger the sun, the faster the motor spins, exhausting more hot air.  It will continue to run at its peak until the sun sets.

Is There A Solar Attic Fan Thermostat?

There is a thermostat available.  However, in our Southern Florida climate, 9 months out of the year, our days (sun) are very warm to hot.

In climates where there is a significant winter, you would want to make sure that any heat buildup in your attic isn’t wasted and continues to aid the heating of your home.  In Florida, even if there is a cold night, when the sun is up, the air outside is warmer than the cooler nighttime air in the attic.  By exhausting the cooler air, the warmer air will be drawn in the attic giving your home an advantage to beating the chill.
