For solar collector efficiency what direction should they be installed on the roof?

The south roof is ideal for maximum winter heat. The second choice would be the West. East and North can be much less effective in the winter when the heater is used the most. 

A chart explaining efficiency loss is available.  If the panels need to be installed in a less than ideal position, it can be compensated for with additional panels.
