August 23, 2011 (Cape Coral, FL) Fafco Solar, a Cape Coral solar electric company, announces the commencement of construction on a solar project to power FGCU’s Harvey Kapnick Education and Research Center at Naples Botanical Garden. The project consists of a 40kW Solar Photovoltaic System with 164 Solar Modules and 164 Enphase Microinverters, attached to the structure’s roof. Fafco will be attaching the solar electric system using a unique mounting system that connects panels to the metal roof without penetrating the roof material. This type of system produces enough energy for approximately 7 homes.

“This is a significant installation for FAFCO Solar,” said Jason Szumlanski, Project Manager. “We are working with the major powers of Southwest FL, such as FGCU, FPL and Manhattan-Kraft Construction. This demonstrates that solar is a viable solution, even for large scale projects.”

Florida Gulf Coast University and the Naples Botanical Garden will be providing a great benefit to the community by its decision to utilize solar energy. It will assist in offsetting utility electric usage, and will also reduce the peak demand for the facility. In addition, the usage of solar energy for such a large facility will conserve fossil fuels, helping to offset the overall carbon footprint for Southwest FL. The project is sponsored by Florida Gulf Coast University.

“These solar panels really represent Florida Gulf Coast University’s commitment to the environment,” said Chad Washburn, Director of Conservation and Education, Naples Botanical Garden. “The 164 panels will power FGCU’s Harvey Kapnick Education and Research Center here at the Naples Botanical Garden. What better place to include solar panels than in a Garden, where sunshine fuels everything in the landscape that happens around you.”

The construction of the solar project began on August 15th, and has an estimated completion date of approximately four weeks. Representatives from Fafco solar will be featured on FOX-4’s Morning Blend show on August 29th to discuss details of the project. Another FOX-4 Morning Blend segment is scheduled to air on September 12th at 8am.
