FORT MYERS, Florida—March 22, 2010—Lee County Electric Company (LCEC) customers with solar energy systems are billed at different rates than standard residential customers. Many LCEC customers are upset that they pay more for utility electric services through LCEC’s net metering program. Fafco Solar, a Cape Coral solar energy supplier, is offering a free billing analysis for affected LCEC customers.

LCEC customers are asked to bring in or contact Fafco Solar with the last 12 months usage on their electric bills. Fafco Solar will perform a month-by-month analysis to inform customers exactly how much the different billing rates affect their utility electric costs. A higher customer charge and higher rates for usage up to 500 kilowatt hours contribute to decreased savings for some customers.

Jason Szumlanski, Fafco Solar’s Operations Manager, says, “The average LCEC customer with a solar energy system and net metering is penalized with higher rates. However, heavy energy users with a solar energy system actually benefit from the rate structure. Also, the impact varies as energy use changes from month to month, We want to help customers accurately calculate the impact. Solar electric systems will save any residential customer money, but the savings varies with amount of electricity purchased from LCEC.”

The billing analysis is available for all LCEC residential customers with net metering agreements, regardless of where their solar electric system was purchased. This is a free community service. Go to http://fafcosolar.com/go/LCEC for more information.
